Responsible Gambling
Your well-being always comes first. Know the risks, set your limits, and play responsibly.
Gambling Should Be Fun
Online gambling is a form of entertainment, not a way to make money. The house always has an edge, and no strategy can guarantee consistent wins. When gambling stops being enjoyable and starts causing stress, financial pressure, or conflict in your relationships, it may be time to step back.
We encourage every player to treat gambling the way you would treat any other entertainment expense -- set a budget, stick to it, and walk away when the fun stops.
Warning Signs
Problem gambling can develop gradually. Watch for these indicators:
- Spending more money or time gambling than you planned
- Chasing losses by increasing bets to win back money
- Borrowing money or selling possessions to fund gambling
- Lying to family or friends about how much you gamble
- Feeling restless or irritable when trying to cut back
- Neglecting work, relationships, or responsibilities due to gambling
- Using gambling as an escape from stress, anxiety, or depression
- Failed repeated attempts to stop or control gambling
If you recognize any of these patterns in yourself or someone you know, please reach out for help. You are not alone, and support is available.
Self-Assessment: Could You Have a Gambling Problem?
Answer the following questions honestly. If you answer "yes" to several of these, consider reaching out for help.
- Have you ever felt the need to bet more money to get the same level of excitement?
- Have you tried to stop or cut back on gambling but found it difficult?
- Do you feel restless or irritable when trying to reduce gambling?
- Do you gamble to escape problems or relieve feelings of anxiety or depression?
- After losing money, do you often return to try to win it back?
- Have you lied to family members or others to hide your gambling activity?
- Has gambling caused you to lose a relationship, job, or educational opportunity?
- Do you rely on others for money to resolve financial situations caused by gambling?
- Have you committed or considered committing illegal acts to fund gambling?
If you answered "yes" to 3 or more questions, you may be experiencing problem gambling. Please contact the National Council on Problem Gambling at ncpgambling.org or call 1-800-GAMBLER for confidential support.
Self-Help Tips
These practical steps can help you maintain control over your gambling:
- Set a budget -- Decide how much you can afford to lose before you start playing. Never gamble with money earmarked for bills, rent, or essentials.
- Set a time limit -- Decide in advance how long you'll play. Use a phone timer as a reminder.
- Take regular breaks -- Step away from the screen frequently. Continuous play clouds judgment.
- Never chase losses -- Accept that losses are part of gambling. Increasing your bets to recover money almost always makes things worse.
- Don't gamble when emotional -- Avoid playing when you're upset, stressed, lonely, or under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
- Use deposit limits -- Most reputable casinos offer daily, weekly, and monthly deposit limits. Set them and don't override them.
- Self-exclude when needed -- If you need a break, use the self-exclusion tools offered by online casinos. This temporarily or permanently blocks your account.
